PROLOGUE
Harry Potter, The-Boy-Who-Lived, The-Man-Who-Defeated-Voldemort, The-Boy-Who-Bloody-Well-Wouldn’t-Die.
Harry had to smirk at the last nickname as he thought it. His ex-rival had told him about it just before the final battle and he had come to realize that it was a shared term of affection between the blonde man and his “greasy-git” of an ex-Potions Professor.
Harry had just come from what, he swore, would be his last “public show of support” for the current Ministry. Now 35, Harry had decided that it was well past time he look at the life he was leading and what he was leaving behind for future generations.
This had not been a sudden thought. The wizarding world, like the Muggle one, had many prejudices in it, including ones against same-sex relationships. Having found out about this through his friends and his once ex-rival had been quite a shock to him as he had just “come out” to them at the time…
“Ron, ‘Mione, Draco… there’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you all for a while now,” Harry stated though he seemed very interested in the floor at this time.
“Harry, what ever it is…you know we’ll stand by you,” Hermione whispered to her friend, while Ron and Draco both nodded once though stood tensely with apprehension.
“Thanks, ‘Mione…guys. Ok, I’m…gay.”
They all stood there silently. So silently that Harry swore his rapid heartbeat could be heard by all of them. Finally Harry looked up and saw the expressions of sadness showing on all three of his friend’s faces.
“Harry…while we’re glad you told us… we pretty much had figured that out already and…” Hermione started.
“What?”
“Well, yeah, mate. I mean… other than Cho back in fifth year, you haven’t ever dated another bird. And…well… Draco and I caught you watching Justin in Great Hall in sixth year… so it was pretty obvious… to us at least,” Ron replied
“But you never said anything…” Harry stammered then looked at Draco.
“Potter…Harry… you grew up in Muggle society, correct?” At Harry’s uncomprehending look Draco continued, “And you know the prejudices that many Muggles have towards homosexuals? Well, unfortunately, much of the wizarding world has those same prejudices…some even more so. And, while we are grateful for you telling us, we want to be sure you understand this.”
At Draco’s words Harry’s face literally drained of color. “So…I’m gonna be considered a freak in the wizarding world as well as the Muggle one… I am a freak…” the last he said so softly that it was barely audible in the room.
“Harry! No! You are not a freak, and don’t you ever say something like that again. You are a kind and caring person who just finds those of his own gender attractive. There is nothing wrongs with that or you. People, both Muggles and wizards don’t understand… and most won’t accept it. We all three actually discussed it before and Draco…” Hermione stopped and looked at Draco.
“Harry, I came out to them then. I’m bisexual myself, but know how the wizarding world feels and had been keeping it hidden. Harry, you can trust us with this, but I wouldn’t suggest you let many others know. While St. Mungo’s doesn’t hold to the practice that bi- or homosexuality is a ‘treatable illness’ or even wrong, there are other ‘medical’ facilities that make quite a profit on these ‘cases.’ One of which I know for a fact our illustrious Headmaster helps fund.”
Harry’s eyes widened at this and he visibly swallowed hard. “Dumbledore funds one of those places?” All three of the others nodded once and wouldn’t look Harry in the eyes.
“He does,” Ron replied, “and any students who are caught in a homosexual act or admit to being a pouf are sent to it. No parent or guardian consent needed due to a clause in the law that the fool helped put into place.”
Harry’s face grew red with anger. “And parents…even those who are accepting of that lifestyle still send their children here?”
“Where else are they to send them, Harry? With Hogwarts being the only wizarding school in England, most can’t afford to send them out of the country. And with the Decree against Underage Use of Magic, they can’t be home schooled… So what else are they to do?” Hermione inquired with tears in her eyes.
“I don’t know… but…” Harry paused and took a deep breath. “I’m gonna think about this some more once we’ve defeated Volde and I can get out from under that manipulative old goat we have as a Headmaster. I promise you this, though… I’m going to find a way to change this!”
“And we promise to support you… no matter what happens,” Draco voiced while the other two nodded.
Yes, Harry thought to himself. It’s time to make those words a reality. Many preparations I’ve already made. But it’s time to bring in the others for this.
